Our Position on Technology

Technology has a place at St. Croix Catholic School. It is a tool that serves the formation of deep thinkers; it is not a substitute for thinking.

Philosophy

Education draws out what is most human in a child: the capacity for wonder, wisdom, and love. This requires patience, attention, memory, concentration, and the self-discipline to remain with something difficult.

There are many tools used to foster learning. At St. Croix Catholic School, books, pencils, hands-on work, thoughtful conversations, curious questions, and technology each have a place to assist teachers and students.

Used with prudence

Technology can provide valuable access to knowledge and help students develop skills for modern life. At the same time, premature or excessive use of technology can weaken the very habits education seeks to cultivate and can draw children away from meaningful, in-person relationships.

For that reason, prudence guides our decisions. Teachers and administrators carefully determine when technology supports learning or if another approach will better serve the formation of the whole child: mind, body, and soul.

Why it matters

Forming students who can think for themselves and exercise self-discipline with screen usage are two of the most important things a school can do with regard to teaching how to use technology. Technology should support that formation, not compete with it.
