170 years of Catholic education in the St. Croix Valley
For well over a century and a half, families in Stillwater and the surrounding valley have entrusted their children to this school, and generations have grown up in its classrooms and its faith.
Our beginnings
The school has served the St. Croix Valley for nearly 170 years, one of the longest-standing Catholic schools in the region.
St. Michael Parish was founded in 1853, and its parish school followed in 1856 under Fr. Murray, the pastor at the time. St. Mary’s Parish was founded in 1865 for the German speakers of Stillwater, and a German-speaking school began there in 1872. In the 1890s, the school buildings were combined, with English-language classes on one floor and German on another. It was not until 1968 that the parishes of St. Michael’s, St. Mary’s, and St. Charles in Bayport combined their schools into one St. Croix Catholic School. Today, the school is supported by St. Michael, St. Mary, and St. Charles Parishes.
A living tradition
Today the Dominican Sisters of St. Cecilia and a dedicated lay faculty carry that tradition forward, forming students in the same faith that began the school more than a century and a half ago.
